![]() Basketball Team Holds Free Clinic for Kids at New Day Christian Church
September 17, 2011- Port Charlotte, FL. The Florida Christian College Men’s Basketball Team traveled to New Day Christian Church, in Port Charlotte, to host their first basketball clinic of the 2011-2012 season. The clinic was designed for grades 3 through 7 during the morning session and grades 8 through 12 during the afternoon session. All together the team was able to work with around 45 students from the community. The camp was a blessing not only to the kids, but also to the FCC players. Sophomore point guard and Team Captain Montique Lynch commented afterwards, “I enjoyed this experience. Just helping the kids…. It feels so good to give back, it humbles me.”
The emphasis of this camp was basketball fundamentals; yet, at the same time it gave the team an opportunity to teach about “life fundamentals” as well. Freshmen sharpshooter Juwan Braye confirmed this. “The kids surprised me. They were there to learn more about basketball but instead of just learning about basketball, they learned how to be an all around good person.” Over the course of the day the Suns basketball players and coaches were able to speak to the students about friendships, teamwork, and the value of doing your best. Head Coach Jake Deer was extremely pleased with the clinic and the way the team used the game of basketball to impact the student’s lives in a way that really transcends the game. “Basketball is such a unique sport that many of the things we are able to talk about on the basketball floor correlate directly to life itself. We had a great time being able to encourage young people to become more than what they think they are capable of becoming. This was a great opportunity for our players to begin to learn how they can use their gifts for the glory of God. They did a great job!” more information and all the latest news and scores!
