Shane Smarr
Head Coach

The 2013-14 season will be Coach Smarr's first season as head coach for the Suns. Coach Smarr brings determination, excellence and passion to FCC as head basketball coach. He is smart, articulate, a hard worker and a great competitor who has been trained under many excellent coaches in the state of Florida. His own experience at Florida Christian College gives him great insight into the lives of his players and to what it takes to perform well on the court as well as finish strong in academics as an FCC student. Coach Smarr is committed to his players and has high standards for their performance on the court and off.

Coach Smarr is from Ocala, FL where he attended Vanguard High School and played under Florida basketball coaching legend, Jim Haley. His senior year he transferred and graduated from School of the Kingdom in Ocala, FL where he finished out his high school basketball career under high school championship coach, Danny Smith.

From 2005-2010, Coach Smarr attended Florida Christian College as a student. He graduated from FCC with a degree in Christian Leadership, specializing in business management. Coach Smarr played for the Suns and was coached by FCC’s all-time winningest coach, Jake Deer, among others. Shane was named Team Captain as a Sophomore and kept that title through his Senior season. In his senior season, Coach Smarr was named team MVP and was also named to the NCCAA DII South All-Region team. After graduating, Coach Smarr worked as the Assistant Coach for the Suns from 2009-2011 and then as Associate Head Coach during the 2011-12 season, both under Suns head coach, Jake Deer.

Coach Smarr is excited about what God will do this year with the 2013-14 Florida Christian College men's basketball team. "My wife Kristen and I are very excited about the opportunity to lead the basketball program here at FCC. The future is bright and the expectations will remain high. This program has been built with hard work, dedication and a true commitment to excellence both on and off the court. This formula has proven to be successful up to this point and I intend on continuing that effort. It is my belief that this team will reap what it sows. With that said, next season starts now."

Suns previous head basketball coach, Jake Deer says, “I am really excited for Shane to gain this opportunity. He has been a foundational cornerstone in the resurgence of not only the Men’s Basketball program but also has played a key role within the athletic department as a whole both as a player and a coach. Shane will do a great job leading this program forward into this new era. He will be dedicated to the spiritual, academic, and basketball development of each and every student athlete that has the opportunity to play for him. I am looking forward to watching SUNS basketball for many years to come. I could not be happier for Shane!”
